Are You In It to Win It?

I am a huge reality fan. Well, that's not accurate. I don't watch any of the Housewives or Races or Survivals, but Dancing with the Stars and American Idol (and my secret pleasure The Bachelor and Bachelorette) are regular passions here at my house.
This week both shows had contestants talking about their ultimate goals for the competition.
Last night Niecy Nash was sent home but not before she said "I expected to win!" Her professional partner said, "no you didn't." Admittedly, she wasn't the best and many thought she stayed longer than her talent dictated, but her spirit and passion for the dance was infectious. But here's what she responded to her pro's reality check:
"Oh, yes I did, are you kidding me?" she teased. "I sure did expect to win. Let me tell you what Louie Van Amstel, I never enter something expecting to lose. Who does that?!"
Turn the channel to Fox and contestant Michael Lynche tells Ryan Seacrest that his goal was to make the final three and so this night (the night the final three would be decided) was super important. After he sang, Judge Ellen DeGerenes says"
"Final three? Why isn't your goal to be the American Idol and win it?"
"That's my next goal," he said.
"That should be your only goal," she responded.
Two different approaches to an opportunity of a life time.
There is something to be said for having mini-goals along the way to life's ultimate goal but which sticks in your mind the most? The short term goal – "I want to have a successful day." Or the long term goal "I want to be known as the only expert in my field."
Which is the mantra you repeat in your head every day?
Check out this article that offers 10 tips to goal setting and ultimate triumph.
And here is a series of 3 worksheets to write your goals down.
Speaking of writing it down – a couple summers ago I read a great book called Write It Down and Make it Happen. So whether your goal is short or long term – put it in writing so you can look at it every day. And although you may have many small, stepping stone goals along your journey – let your mantra be to WIN IT ALL, just like Niecy Nash.
