Elevator Pitch for Home Based Business Owners

When was the last time you used your elevator pitch? One of the frustrations of being home based is that we so infrequently see other people; new people, people we don't know. So we go to a chamber event or networking after hours function and someone asks what we do and we launch into a monologue that exceeds the suggested 30 seconds. Frankly, we are so happy to talk to someone face to face – we go a little over board. Okay – maybe that's just me.
That's why crafting, memorizing and then internalizing our elevator pitch is so important. I recently learned of a tool from Harvard Business Review called the Elevator Pitch Builder.
This great online tool takes you through the steps of the Who, What, Why and Goal components of a successful elevator pitch.
At each stage you are offered tips for success and even suggested words to incorporate. Once you have completed the creation of your elevator pitch, the tool will analyze and provide information so you know how well you've done.
The most important step? Paint a picture of PAIN that your target customer may have and then swoop in with your solution. Get listeners nodding.
"Times are tough." NOD
"Money is tight?" NOD
"Bet you wish you could maximize on your time and increase your profits." NOD
"Well, at XYZ, we understand your concerns and that's why we offer….bla, bla."
So what picture will you paint?
Spend a little time before your next networking event and visit the Elevator Pitch Builder and try on a new 30 second commercial for size.
